Espresso shot being pulled from a home espresso machine

The Intermediate to Advanced Home Coffee Setup (For When Basic Isn’t Enough)

You’ve been making coffee at home for a while. You know the difference between a burr and a blade grinder. You want to go deeper. This is the setup for when you’re ready to actually dial things in — espresso, milk texture, extraction ratios — without opening a coffee shop in your kitchen.

The espresso machine

At the intermediate level, the Breville Barista Express or Bambino Plus is where most people land. The Barista Express has a built-in grinder which saves counter space and money. The Bambino is smaller and pairs with a separate grinder for more control. Both pull decent shots consistently.

The grinder (standalone)

If you go with a machine without a built-in grinder, the Baratza Encore or the Breville Smart Grinder Pro are the standard recommendations at this level. Consistent particle size is what separates a good shot from a bad one.

Milk texture

A steam wand is what makes the difference between a flat coffee drink and a latte. Learning to texture milk properly takes about a week of practice and then it’s automatic. The Bambino Plus actually auto-steams, which removes one more variable if you’re not into the learning curve.
